Beat the Jam
FAQs

Learn more about how the app works by reading through our frequently asked questions.

1. What does this app do?

Beat the Jam is an all-in-one traffic monitoring and analysis tool that provides comprehensive traffic information at the Causeway and 2nd Link.

Besides traffic data from Google Maps and users, we display traffic camera images and traffic trend forecasts derived from historical data, up to six days in advance. This allows you to plan your trip across the border ahead of time and avoid projected peak hours.

2. How do you calculate the time to clear the Causeway / 2nd Link?

Time-to-clear readings are calculated using Google Maps’ real-time traffic data together with anonymised data shared by users.

Please set location tracking to “While using the app” so that we can provide more accurate readings for everyone.

Rest assured, we do not store your personal information.

3. Isn’t Google Maps or Waze better?

Google Maps and Waze are excellent GPS navigation tools that provide real-time guidance while you are on the road.

Beat the Jam is designed for a different purpose — to give you a quick overview of traffic conditions at the Causeway and 2nd Link while you are at home or in the office, without needing to open a navigation app.

It serves as an all-in-one traffic monitoring and analysis tool to help you decide whether to cross the border now or wait for the jam to subside.

4. How does the 24-hour forecast work?

The chart shows the projected traffic trend for the entire day and highlights peak hours to avoid.

A peak-hour threshold of 30 minutes is used. The historical data referenced is displayed under the “Reference Data” field.

Forecasted traffic trends for the next six days are also available under the “Forecast” tab for each route.

5. Where do you source the traffic camera images from?

In Singapore, traffic camera images are sourced from the Traffic Images dataset provided by LTA Singapore, in accordance with the Singapore Open Data Licence version 1.0.

In Malaysia, traffic camera images are provided by Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) under the Malaysia Government Open Data 1.0.

6. Why do you need to track my location?

Location data helps improve the accuracy of our traffic readings and forecasts. We only collect this data while the app is in use.

If you prefer not to grant location access, the app will still function normally, although traffic accuracy may be reduced.
